Aureolus is an alchemist who is the original version of Lorenzo and Ugo. He lived in the middle ages, when alchemy prospered, soon explicating immortality.

To him, immortality meant an undying soul, eternal Azoth. He used clones to create bodies identical to his own, passing onto it the Azoth from his own body. If he continued to create these clones before they got old and died, he would be able to live forever. This became his purpose, his ultimate mission - an alchemical truth. This continued until his thirteenth clone, Lorenzo. However, the next clone, Ugo, abandoned his mission, choosing his love for a woman called Ayla instead. This was not supposed to have happened. This is because that it meant, so to speak, that the alchemical truth he had ultimate conviction in had been defeated by something as worthless as "love".
