The Bellis are a family that have long been practicing alchemy in Europe, and Ugo appears to be one of its decendents. After falling in love with Ayla, visiting for research, he soon left the castle and emigrated to America, the two marrying and having Fiona.
In actuality, however, Ugo is Aurelous Belli himself, an alchemist from the middle ages who has survived for such a long time by cultivating clones of himself, and he was never supposed to have married Ayla. As a result, the uninterrupted transmission of the alchemist's Azoth was passed to Fiona without her knowledge.
